Description
Chimneys is a house dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of coursed slatestone rubble, with cob on the front and rear, and has a colourwashed render. The gabled slate roof features a stone stack on the left end and an external lateral stone stack in the center of the front wall. The house has a 3-unit plan, with a through-passage to the right of the central hall, a parlour to the right, and a service room to the left. It is two storeys high and has a four-window range. There is a 20th-century door to the left and a 20th-century lean-to pentice over another 20th-century door to the right of the lateral stack. The windows have flat rendered arches, with late 19th-century two-light casements and a 20th-century casement in the top right. A 20th-century outshut is present at the rear.
Inside, there are cased beams in the room to the right. A 17th-century plank door and a 19th-century quarter-turn staircase with winders are located to the left of the passage. The lateral stack in the central room, which was formerly the hall, has an open fireplace with a roll and ogee stop to the chamfered bressummer. The principal rafters of the A-frame trusses are visible on the first floor. The layout of this house is similar to that of Crossway and Cross Cottage.
