Description
Rothern Bridge, an early 15th-century structure, was widened in the early 19th century. It is built from rubble stone with ashlar dressings and is oriented roughly south-west to north-east as it crosses the River Torridge.
The original arches of the bridge are visible on the undersides, where they rise sharply from the piers to a narrow point. The road carried on these arches was originally between 2.75 meters and 3 meters wide. When the bridge was widened, new arches were added, springing from the cutwaters, which increased the road width to 4 meters.
Above the arches, there is a projecting string course, and above this are the parapets. At the points where the cutwaters rise, they continue above the string course as pilasters. The parapets feature chamfered ashlar copings.
