Description
Beam Bridge is an aqueduct bridge over the River Torridge, built in 1824 by engineer James Green. It is constructed of squared and coursed limestone with ashlar dressings. The bridge features five stilted semi-circular arches, which are divided by engaged Doric half-columns supported on piers. The abaci extend as a raised string course beneath the parapet.
Historically, the bridge was built to carry the Torridge Canal, a project financed by Lord Rolle, the owner of Beam House in Torrington. A plaque on the parapet commemorates this project, which involved importing limestone from the Gower Peninsula and Caldy Island for local farms. The canal was designed to transport horse-drawn tub boats between Torrington and Bideford.
