Description
Taddiport Bridge is a road bridge over the River Torridge, dating from the 16th to 17th century, with some reconstruction in the 19th century. It features rubble piers and three arches, each with different spans and springing heights. The west side has a segmental arch, while the east side displays a more four-centred arch, with stones above arranged in an unusual radial pattern with triangular cutwaters. The bridge has been widened on the west side by shallow segmental arches that spring from the cutwaters. The line of voussoirs extends up to the parapet level, which is finished with rough castellations from repairs made in 1879. The parapets are constructed of rough rubble, and there are iron plates securing tie rods that are dated 1911.
Historical references suggest that the bridge may date back to the 13th century, with a mention in 1311. Leland noted a three-arched bridge at this location, and in the 15th century, two legacies were left for its repair. Taddiport Bridge and The Toll House are considered a group of historical significance.
