Description

Venton Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with alterations made in 1688, along with a 19th-century extension and 20th-century modifications. The building features rendered stone rubble walls topped with a half-hipped asbestos slate roof. There are two rendered rubble axial stacks, with the left-hand stack having a drip-course. The layout consists of three rooms and a through or cross passage, with an unheated lower room on the left. The hall stack is positioned against the passage, and there is an axial inner room stack that was probably added to what was once an unheated room. An outshut was added behind the lower room around 1688, which is noted on a plaque on the front that commemorates the remodelling. A rear parallel block was likely built in the 19th century, aligning with the outshut behind the hall and inner room. The interior has been remodelled in the 20th century, and while the overall plan remains relatively unchanged, original features may be hidden. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with three windows, featuring mid-20th-century two-light wooden casements. To the left of the centre, there is an original four-centred granite arched doorway that is chamfered and has worn stops. Above the doorway is a carved granite plaque dated 1688, flanked by a carved heart and the initials I.K. with a W above. Behind the doorway is a 19th-century panelled and glazed door. At the left-hand end, there is a corbelled first-floor chimney stack that is truncated at the roof apex. The late 17th-century outshut at the rear of the left-hand end has a single granite-framed light on the gable end. The 19th-century addition extends to the left of the outshut at the rear. The interior does not show any early features, but some may be concealed by later alterations, and the roof timbers were not inspected.
