Description
Coome Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating back to the 17th century, with origins in an earlier building. It was restored in the late 20th century. The farmhouse is constructed from stone rubble with granite dressings, and has slate roofs with gabled ends. Stone stacks are situated at the gable and side.
The building is arranged in a T-shaped layout, with a cross-wing on the east side. The main range, now a single room, appears to have been remodelled in the 17th century as a two-room plan. The right-hand room originally had a front entrance and a central stack, while the left room had a stair turret at the rear. The stairwell is now located at the rear angle of the cross-wing, which contains a kitchen and an unheated room. This cross-wing may date back to the 17th century, or potentially earlier, and was extended forward in the 18th century with a further room. The late 20th-century restoration included removing ground floor partitions from the main range and adding an outshut to the east side of the cross-wing.
The south front has an asymmetrical arrangement of three windows and one bay. The main range has a central lateral stack. It features a doorway with a chamfered round arch, pyramid stops, a plank door with wrought-iron strap hinges, and a small single-light granite window to the right. The windows are 12- and 16-pane sashes dating from the 20th century. The cross-wing section has a small granite attic window in the gable, and a lower two-story extension to the front with a side stack and 12-pane sashes. A late 20th-century stone outshut is located on the east side of the cross-wing, and a conservatory has been added, enclosing a chamfered granite doorframe and window on the east side. The rear (north) of the main range has a projecting stair turret on the right and an outshut in the angle with the cross-wing on the left.
The ground floor of the main range is now open throughout, with roughly chamfered cross-beams. The right-hand end has deeply chamfered joists with hollow step stops, and a lateral fireplace with chamfered granite jambs and an unchamfered timber lintel at the front. A new fireplace is located at the west end. The cross-wing is divided into two rooms: a kitchen at the front with a modern range in the axial stack’s fireplace, and an unheated room at the back. An added room at the front of the cross-wing has a stove in a lateral fireplace. The cross-wing roof features halved and pegged lapped collar trusses. The main range has later softwood lapped collar trusses.
Despite the restoration, Coome Farmhouse retains much of its 17th-century and earlier fabric.
