Description

The Who'd Have Thought It Inn is an inn that was likely originally a farmhouse, dating from the 17th century with 19th and 20th-century additions. It features rendered stone rubble walls and a gable-ended grouted slate roof. There are two rubble stacks with a slate drip course, one axial and one projecting from the right-hand gable end. The original layout consisted of a two-room-and-through-passage plan, with the larger left-hand room heated by the axial stack that backs onto the passage, and the right-hand room heated by the gable end stack. A rear wing with one heated room was added behind the left-hand room, likely in the 18th century. A 19th-century lean-to at the right-hand end has been converted into a bar, and there are further 19th and 20th-century rear extensions. The building is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with three windows, featuring later 20th-century two-light casements with small panes in large openings. There is a 20th-century plank door to the right of centre, set behind a small gabled porch that is probably from the 19th century. At the right-hand end, there is a single-storey addition. Inside, the left-hand room has a chamfered cross beam with indiscernible stops, and the fireplace features a cambered wooden lintel that is chamfered with hollow step stops. The fireplace in the right-hand room has a stone arch, which may be a replacement.
