Description

This is a small house located in Buckland Monachorum, dating from the late 16th century, with significant alterations and extensions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure features stone rubble walls and a gable-ended slate roof, along with a rendered rear lateral stack. The original part of the house includes an entry hall and a principal room that projects at the front right, heated by the rear lateral stack and connected to newel stairs. It is possible that the house originally extended further to the left. A 20th-century extension is located at the rear, and a 20th-century staircase has been inserted into the entrance hall. The front of the house was partially reconstructed around the mid-20th century.

The building is two storeys tall with an asymmetrical three-window front and a projecting gable to the right of centre. It has 20th-century metal frame casement windows with small panes. On the right-hand side of the projection at first floor level, there is likely an original single light square-headed window framed in granite. To the left of the projecting gable, there is an open-fronted lean-to slate porch with stone seats, behind which is a three-centred granite arched doorway with roll moulding.

Inside, the right-hand room features one chamfered cross beam with straight cut stops and wany joists. The original stone newel stairs have a round-headed chamfered doorframe, which is set at a significant height above the floor level, the reason for which is unclear as the fireplace evidence suggests the floor level has not changed. The chamfered granite jambs of the fireplace are exposed, but the lintel is concealed. The roof space is inaccessible, and there is no evidence of roof trusses on the first floor.
