Description
Gulwell Bridge is a bridge that crosses the River Ashburn, likely built in the 18th century, around 1775 or earlier. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a single segmental arch made with well-cut voussoirs and a raised keystone on both sides. The parapets are topped with copings made of roughly-squared blocks of stone. The southeast parapet extends northward where the river runs alongside the road. On one of the coping stones of this parapet, the date 1775 and the initials CCS and PS are incised, enclosed in ornate brackets resembling a cartouche. On the upstream side, the riverbank has an old cobble surface, likely intended to prevent erosion.
