Description
No. 46 is a house located on West Street in Ashburton, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It features a solid roughcast front and a slated roof, with rendered chimneys on each gable end. The left chimney has an early cap made from a projecting slate course. The building stands three storeys high and has two widely spaced windows. The doorway, situated between the ground storey windows, has a half-glazed and panelled door that dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. The windows are 8-paned sashes, except for those on the upper third storey, which have only 4 panes. There is a boxed eaves-cornice along the top. Notably, to the right of the ground storey is a low, pointed-arched recess that contains an old tap, which is characteristic of several remaining conduit heads that were part of the town's public water supply in the 19th century.
