42, West Street

No. 42 West Street is a house dating from the late 18th century. The ground storey is solidly rendered, while the upper storeys, likely timber-framed, are covered with wood shingles from the 20th century. The right gable end is slate-hung, and the roof is slated and hipped to the left, with rendered chimneys on each gable end. The house has three storeys and is three windows wide.

The doorway is flanked by panelled pilasters that support an entablature featuring a fluted frieze with paterae at the ends and a dentilled cornice. The reveals are panelled, with the bottom panels flush. Above the door is a fanlight with a 4-centred arch, Gothic glazing, and pierced patterned spandrels. The door itself is a four-panelled design, likely from the late 19th or 20th century.

The ground storey has triple-sashed windows, with a 6-paned window in the centre and 2-paned windows on the outside. The upper storey features 6-paned sashes, except for the window on the third storey, which has only 3 panes in the upper sashes. A raised band is present at the first floor, and the eaves cornice is fluted and coved.
