Description

Sparnham House is a large house, likely dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, and now divided into flats. The front is rendered, with a solid ground storey and a probable timber-frame above. Slate-hanging is visible on portions of the right side and rear walls, and the roof is slated with rendered chimneys, one featuring a bracketed cap. The house is double-depth and likely three rooms wide, distinguished by an entrance hall and staircase located at the left-hand end. A low rear wing, possibly originally used for services or stabling, is situated to the left.

The house has three storeys and three windows across the front. The main doorway is to the left and features panelled pilasters and a triangular pediment resting on consoles; it has a six-panelled door with the two lower panels flush. A small 20th-century door has been inserted to the left of the main door, with another inserted to the left of that, cutting through the quoins, and marking the front door of the adjacent property. The windows have been altered and are of varying sizes; most are plain 19th-century sash windows, with one 20th-century metal casement, and two triple sashes in the ground storey. An eaves-cornice with dentils and brackets, featuring fluting between the brackets, runs along the top. Raised quoins are visible to the left of the upper storeys. The right side wall has two barred sashes, one with six panes and the other with eight. The rear wing features wood casements with glazing bars.

The interior features a main entrance hall and staircase, which are mostly Victorian in a Georgian style, although some elements may be original. The open-well wood staircase has twisted balusters and shaped step-ends. One door has a moulded surround and pediment, while the floor is tiled with coloured and patterned designs. The ceiling is boarded and ribbed, and coloured glass is present in the inner door and stair window.
