Description
St Gudula's Well is a holy well located on the east side of Old Totnes Road in Ashburton. It is likely of medieval origin and is fed by a spring that has nearly dried up. The well consists of a small pool of water supplied by a narrow channel to the southeast, both of which are enclosed by low stone rubble retaining walls. On the western side, there is a taller stone rubble wall facing the road. Attached to this wall is a worn oval cement plaque that notes its restoration in the 1930s; it is said that the waters of the well are beneficial for weak eyes. Access to the well is provided by a shallow flight of stone steps from the southwest. In the late 20th century, the area surrounding the well and the nearby St Gudula's Cross was enhanced with a surface of stone chippings, a public seat, and an ornamental tree.
