Description

Belford Mill and Belford Mill Cottage, also known as The Coffin Mill, is a former mill building that has been converted into two houses. It is likely from the early 19th century and constructed of stone rubble, with the top storey featuring 20th-century weatherboarding that imitates the original louvres. The building has a slated roof and two stone rubble chimneys on the wall that adjoins the road. It is a long, narrow structure, with the northern section bending to follow the curve of the road, while the southern section is wedge-shaped. This building appears to have been used for processing, with a wool loft on the top floor. The actual mill, which had a water-wheel, is believed to be the ruined structure immediately to the north; although there are no visible remains of the wheel-pit, the line of the leat can still be traced. The building has four storeys and is eight windows wide, with most windows being 8-paned sashes, likely from the 20th century. There are no windows in the top storey or in the west wall adjoining the road, although the west wall does have a blocked window. The interior has reportedly been gutted during the conversion to houses. According to Helen Harris, Belford was originally a woollen mill owned by Messrs Berry, which was converted to a corn mill in the mid-19th century. When she wrote about it, the gear wheels of the corn mill were still in place, and a large wheel pit was visible.
