Description
The barn at East Lounston Farm, located about 3 metres north-east of East Lounston Farmhouse, dates from the 16th or 17th century, with the western end likely being an addition from the 18th or early 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with some cob and features a hipped corrugated-iron roof at the eastern end. A 20th-century concrete block addition with a lean-to roof of corrugated iron is present at the eastern end of the farmyard. The barn is a single storey and includes some 19th-century plank doors with wrought-iron strap-hinges. The older eastern section has a roof structure of short, jointed cruck trusses, which may have been truncated when the cob walls were rebuilt in stone. These crucks are side-pegged with threaded purlins, and the collars are pegged to the faces of the cruck-blades, with the ridge-piece likely being a later addition. The eastern section features 18th or early 19th-century trusses with plain feet on the principal rafters.
