Description
The boundary wall adjacent to the gazebo at the rear of Number 51 High Street in Tewkesbury is likely the remains of a former quay wall, dating from the 14th or 15th century, with 18th-century additions. It is constructed from large weathered sandstone blocks and features a short run of steep weathered coping in one section, along with three buttresses. The wall is approximately 1.6 meters high, but has been raised with 18th-century brickwork. It extends for about 16 meters from underneath the front wall of the gazebo to the junction with the western end of Clark's Alley. Tewkesbury did not have a defensive town wall, suggesting that this section of wall served as a boundary to the Avon or Mill Avon waterway.
