Description
The Bottle Kiln at Winchcombe Pottery is a structure believed to date from the late 18th century and was rebuilt in the mid-20th century.
This circular kiln is primarily made of brick, with some concrete used in its construction. At the base, there is a brick foundation featuring four concrete openings or fire holes that provide access to the fire and ashpit inside. The second stage of the kiln has an opening on the southern side that leads into the chamber. Above this, the brick structure tapers into a tall chimney, which includes an opening or wicket leading into the hovel above the chamber. Iron bands are used to support the base of this upper section.
Inside, the kiln features an inner course of bricks known as the bag wall surrounding the chamber, with a space between this and the outer course. Connecting bricks at intervals support the bag wall. The kiln floor consists of concrete slabs with gaps in between, and the arched ceiling has a central opening leading to the hovel and chimney above.
