Description

The Snowshill War Memorial is a war memorial erected in 1923, designed by architect Frederick Landseer Maur Griggs and built by George and Albert Diston and John Coppinger. It is constructed from Cotswold stone.

The memorial stands on a three and four stepped platform that accommodates the steeply sloped site. It features a pedestal with a square plinth and an octagonal dado with stepped stops, topped by a tapered octagonal shaft that supports a cross. The cross is covered by a stone canopy. The west face of the cross displays a relief carving of the crucifixion of Christ, while the east face features a relief carving of the Madonna and Child.

Around the top of the dado is a recessed band with an inscription in relief-carved lettering that reads:

IN MEMORY / OF THOSE / FROM THIS / VILLAGE / WHO DIED / FOR THEIR / COUNTRY IN / 1914 – 1918

The names of five men are carved near the base of the dado. Additionally, one of the steps of the platform has the inscription RESTORED / 1995.
