Description
The garden wall and lodges to the south of Snowshill Manor date from the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. The structure features coursed squared stone that transitions to squared stone brought to courses, with an ashlar top on the wall and small squared stone used for the lodges. The roofs are made of stone slate, and there is an ashlar wall between the lodges.
The long wall runs from the Manor House, separating the garden from the road, and includes two single-bay buildings positioned at right angles with a gateway between them. From the garden side, the wall has a plinth extending for about 27 meters, with a blocked doorway near the house and evidence of a former stepped top, which is more visible from the road side. The wall features a two-course, ridged stone top that ramps down slightly at four points, and there are two lean-to buttresses just before the gateposts.
The construction of the wall changes about 27 meters from the house, with a slight angle at 31 meters, and it ends at 52 meters, where it returns 2 meters to the first lodge. Viewed from outside the garden, the wall returns to the rear corner of the lodge on the right. The left lodge has a boarded door with a timber lintel at the front, while the left side features an ashlar wall with a slightly projecting pier at each end, a plain plinth, and a doorway with a stone lintel in the center. The bottom half of the door is boarded, and the upper half has diagonally-set bars. Above this is a plain coping that curves up to the end piers, each topped with a weathered cap. The other lodge is similar but has a stone lintel above its doorway.
This garden wall and lodges are important features in both the garden and the street scene, forming a group with the Manor House, Manor Cottages, and the Church.
