Description
The Malt Shovel is a house and former malthouse that has been converted, dating from the 17th century for the malthouse and the 18th century for the adjoining house. The former malthouse features square-panelled timber framing with rendered infill, now mostly encased in brick and limestone rubble, and has a concrete tile roof. The 18th-century house is built of coursed squared and dressed limestone with a slate roof.
The malthouse has a gable end facing the road, while the 18th-century range is at right angles to it, with a 20th-century extension creating a 'T'-shaped overall plan for the complex. The west front of the former malthouse includes two 20th-century single-light casements and a part-glazed 20th-century door with a gabled canopy on the east-facing elevation. The south front of the house features a three-light and a two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement on the ground floor, and two two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements on the first floor, all with stopped hoods. There is a part-glazed door with a gabled canopy on the lower left, and a glass door with glazing bars and a single-light casement in the 20th-century extension. The gable ends of the 18th-century range have flat coping, and there are gable end and off-the-ridge stacks. The interior was not inspected, and nothing remains of the interior features of the malthouse.
