Description
Ashmead is a house dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, with square panelled timber framing and rendered infill, and has a stone slate roof. There are ashlar, paired ashlar, rendered, and brick stacks. The house comprises a stone-built range facing the main village street, and a timber-framed range set at a right angle to the rear. The front of the house has a symmetrical design with two windows, featuring 3-light double-chamfered stone mullioned casements with stopped hoods and large ornate fleur-de- lys hinges. A central, 20th-century gabled stone porch provides access to a 20th-century plank door. A single 3-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement is located on the ground floor of the right gable end, and a similar 2-light casement is in the attic. The rear range has a timber-framed first floor with a 2-light stone-mullioned casement with a stopped hood and a 20th-century plate glass window on the ground floor. Other windows on this range include a small canted oriel window, a larger 2-light oriel window, a 19th-century casement, a 2-light wooden casement with horizontal glazing bars, and a single-light casement with glazing bars. The stone-built gable end features three courses of pigeon holes with projecting landings towards the apex. The gable ends of the stone-built range have stepped coping, and the right gable end has a roll-cross saddle. Inside the front left-hand room of the stone-built portion, there is an open fireplace with a bressumer beam. An inglenook seat is to the left, with a small cupboard door at the back providing access to a void ventilated at the top by a cupboard with pierced drop-shaped splat balusters. A similar vent with 'S'-curved splat balusters is located to the right of the fireplace. A close studded timber-framed partition wall divides the room. The beams have moulded stops.
