Description

The Shady Nook is a cottage dating from the 17th century, with a later extension. It features square-panelled timber framing with brick infill, although some areas have been rebuilt in brick. The roof is made of artificial slate. The extension, possibly a former stable, is constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone, with stone slate roofing on the east side and red tile roofing on the west. The building has a long rectangular plan, with the timber-framed section facing the lane and the extension located at the south gable end.

At the north gable end, there is a lean-to with a corrugated iron roof, which is not of special interest. The cottage is two storeys high. The west front of the timber-framed section has a single fixed casement window with glazing bars and shutters, and to the right, there is a 19th-century plank door. There is also a small unglazed window located in the upper right. On the east front, the ground floor features a 3-light window with a timber lintel at the rear, while the first floor has a 2-light casement window with early leaded panes.

The stable section includes a small double-width opening with a timber lintel on the ground floor, a ventilation slit above, and a pitching window with a heavy pegged frame to the left, along with a triangular ventilation slit at the gable end. The west front has a single-light window and a ventilation slit on the ground floor, with another single-light window in the upper right. The interior has not been inspected. At the time of the last survey in April 1987, many stone slates were missing from the roof of the stable.
