Description

Singleton Cottage is a pair of semi-detached cottages dating back to the 15th century or earlier, with further development in the 16th century and alterations in the 20th century. The construction consists of square-panelled timber framing, close-studded timber-framing with wattle and daub and painted brick infill, blue lias masonry and painted brick, and a red tile roof, with brick stacks. The building has an L-shaped layout.

The south front features the gable end of a cruck-framed section from the 15th century, alongside a close-studded timber-framed wing set at a right angle. A 20th-century two-light wood casement is located on the first floor of the gable end, while the close-studded wing to the left has a 20th-century single-light wood casement and a raking dormer. A 19th-century plank door is positioned on the right side. The left-hand wall has been refaced in brick, with five 20th-century two-light casements, two 20th-century plank doors, and three 20th-century raking dormers. The rear wall of the main body shows square-panelled timber-framing, with a window and door blocked in brick where the wall has been rebuilt using blue lias.

The interior of the 15th-century main body contains at least three full cruck trusses, with tie beams featuring run-out stops. The 16th-century wing has tie beams with diamond stops and braces. The north end of the 15th-century main body was not inspected. This building demonstrates group value through its age and historic construction techniques.
