Description
The raised pavement in front of numbers 12 to 15 Mill Street in Tewkesbury dates from the 19th century, although it may replace an earlier version. It features brick paving that spans the full width of the frontages, supported by a blue brick wall with brick-on-edge coping that rises to a maximum of eight courses before tapering down to road level at the right end. The paved area, which is partly asphalt, is significantly wider opposite numbers 14 and 15, where there is a return length of walling that includes a flight of four stone steps. Beyond these steps, the retaining wall curves back in a segment towards the wall opposite numbers 12 and 13. This raised pavement continues to St Mary's Road. The houses are set at a higher level than the road to protect them from flooding, as the water rarely rises above this level.
