Description

1 and 2 Mill Bank is a house that was originally two or three separate homes, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century. It features heavy tension-braced large-panel timber framing with painted brick nogging, a tiled roof, and a brick stack. The building has a long jettied front and a steep-pitched roof, with a small lower brick wing at the center and a total of two storeys and an attic.

The front facade has three windows, with two small gabled dormers above a combination of late 18th century or 19th century casements that are arranged in a 2:3:2-light pattern, featuring horizontal bars on the first floor. On the ground floor, there are three 2-light casements with transoms. To the far left, there is a plank door, and near the right end, another door is located under a 4-centre-headed arched overlight, which is made from a single timber member. Both doors are accessed via two very high sandstone steps.

The main framework of the building rises from a heavy cill on a small stone plinth course, and at the right end, next to No. 15 Mill Street, there is a dragon beam that suggests a further jetty on the return of the original structure. Brackets support the jetty, which features a moulded bressumer. A large stack made of 17th century brickwork runs laterally along the central ridge. At the back, there is one gabled dormer with a replacement window and various lights in additional timber framing, while the wing has a gable stack.

The interior has not been inspected. This building is noted as the best preserved of this significant row of early timber-framed cottages, located at a visually important street corner opposite Abbey Mill and set back behind a raised pavement to reduce the risk of flooding.
