Description
No. 7 Mill Bank is a house in a row that dates back to the 16th century, although it has a mid-20th century facade. The building is rendered with internal timber-framing and has a tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with an attic and features two windows. There are large dormers above steel casements and a central 20th century door. The roof is mansard with a brick stack on the left side.
Inside, the structure has been modified but still retains heavy lateral and transverse beams along with ceiling joists from the 16th century, as well as a two-purlin roof. Externally, there is little evidence of its early origins; an early 20th century photograph reveals that it was once two cottages, featuring a large central recessed opening with two doors and wide-spaced 18th century casements. This house is part of an important early group facing Abbey Mills and is situated on a raised pavement to mitigate the risk of annual flooding.
