Description
The raised pavement in front of numbers 1 to 9 Mill Bank in Tewkesbury dates from the 19th century, though it may replace an earlier version. It features blue brick and brick paviors, with a full-width brick paving approximately 1.5 meters wide, leading to a brick-on-edge coping. Beyond this, there is an asphalted area that leads to a retaining wall made of blue brick, reaching a maximum height of 10 courses with a concrete coping. On the left side, there are four concrete steps, and further left, opposite the alley to numbers 11, 12, and 13 Mill Bank, there are two stone steps and one brick step, along with a small section of stonework leading to heavy sandstone coping, likely representing the earlier paving. Opposite number 6, known as Pump Cottage, is a boxed-in 19th-century cast-iron handpump. Early 20th-century photographs indicate that there was once a two-storey pump house at this location, which was believed to have been converted into a cottage by that time. The pavement extends to Mill Street, and the houses here are set at a higher level than the road to protect them from flooding, as the water rarely rises above this level.
