Description

Apperley House is a large house built in the 18th century, significantly enlarged in the second quarter of the 19th century, with a minor addition in the mid to late 19th century and some alterations in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of brick in various bonds and has a slate roof.

The front of the house features three windows and is two stories high, with a single-story, single-bay wing. At the rear, the roof slopes down over an earlier 2½-story section of the house, which includes rear wings. The entrance front has a central single-story Tuscan porch, with the sides infilled with 20th-century glazing. On either side of the porch are tall, 2-light casement windows that have lights above, intersecting tracery, marginal lights, and louvred shutters. There is a plain string course running along the front.

On the first floor, there are three 16-pane sash windows with rubbed-brick heads and reveals faced in wood, featuring shaped blind-box heads above. Another plain string course and a parapet sit above, with stepped parapet gables that have gable chimneys on the ridge. To the right end of the house, there is a projecting single-story room with a 16-pane sash window on the left return and French doors on the front, topped with a pyramid roof. The interior is not accessible for viewing.
