Description
No 20 is a small house located on School Lane in Lower Apperley. It dates from the late 17th century and underwent significant enlargement in the mid to late 19th century, with further modifications possibly in the early 20th century and additional rear extensions in the late 20th century. The house features brick-nogged timber framing, Sussex bond brickwork, and a tiled roof.
The structure consists of four bays and is 1½ storeys tall, with one room depth. The gable facing the road has heavier framing on the ground floor, which includes two 2-light casements, each with weatherboarding above. The upper section has lighter framing due to the raised eaves and features another 2-light casement with weatherboarding above it. A slightly set back modern porch on the right has a boarded door and weatherboarding over it.
On the left side, the first bay has framing that is two panels high with a shallow panel above from the raising of the eaves, supported by angle struts to the wallplate, and features a 2-light casement. The next two timber-framed bays have framing that is three panels high to the eaves, also with angle struts to the wallplate from the end posts. These bays include two 2-light casements, with the first having an iron opening light and the second being wooden. There is possibly a blocked opening at the left end.
A tall, gabled dormer with a 2-light casement is present, and there is a chimney on the ridge at the right end. To the left, there is a slightly set back brick bay featuring a 3-light mullion and transom window with a cambered brick head, and a gabled dormer above it similar to the first. Originally, the building was a 2-bay, 1½ storey house with a single-storey, single bay facing the road, which was raised in height in the mid-19th century, while the brick bay was added in the late 19th or early 20th century, along with a new dormer added to the original house.
