Description
The former Sunday School, located by the Methodist Chapel in Lower Apperley, is a building dating from 1750, originally constructed for the Moravian Brethren. It features Flemish bond brickwork and a tiled roof. The front has two windows and is a single storey with a gable facing the road. There is a circular window positioned high up, and on the right side, there is a central boarded door with a flat, rubbed brick head. Flanking the door are two-light mullion and transom windows, each with a cambered brick arch, and the building has a dentil eaves course. The congregation initially formed following the preaching of George Whitefield, likely using a building by 1747, and soon became Moravian, leading to the construction of the current building in 1750. It was leased to the Methodists in the early 19th century and was purchased by them in 1846. After a new chapel was built in 1901, this building was repurposed as a Sunday School. It is one of the very few surviving Moravian chapels in Gloucestershire.
