Description

Dormer House is a house from the mid-18th century, with later extensions from the late 18th and 19th centuries at the rear. It is constructed of brick on a limestone rubble plinth and has a stone slate roof with brick stacks. The building has a rectangular plan with a stair projection, flanked by the later extensions. It stands two storeys tall, with a cellar and attic.

The front of the house is symmetrical with five windows. It features two squat double-chamfered stone-mullioned windows on either side of a small single-light casement located lower right. The ground and first floors have 18th-century segmental-headed cross windows with wooden mullions. The central entrance has a seven-panel door, now with two glazed panels, accessed by three stone steps. There are three 18th-century two-light hipped roof dormers, and all windows are fitted with leaded panes. The house has a projecting gable-end stack and additional gable-end stacks.

Inside, the house has flagged floors and an 18th-century dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and square newels. There is an open fireplace featuring a cambered bressumer and 15th-century type moulding, with herringbone brickwork at the rear of the fireplace. The beams have deep flat chamfers, and the beams and bressumer over the fireplace may have been reused from an earlier building. The original roof timbers still show carpenter's marks, and there is a flat-roofed cellar with beams that have triangular stops.
