Description

The Stanton Monument is a chest tomb located about 4 meters northwest of the west door in the churchyard of the Church of St. Kenelm. It dates from the late 16th century and commemorates John Stanton, who died in 1589. The tomb is made of limestone and features a flat top with heavy moulded capping. The sides are plain, except for the south side, which has a deeply cut inscription that reads: "BY THIS TOMBE LIETH THE BODY OF / JOHN STANTON MINISTER WHO / AFTER HIS EXILE FOR RELIGION / BEGAN TO PREACH THE GOSPEL / OF CHRIST IN THIS PARISH / 1558 AND SO CONTINUED / WHICH WAS ANO DO / 1589."
