Description

A group of six closely set chest tombs, located about 2 meters north of the Hale enclosure next to the west wall in the churchyard of the Church of St. Kenelm, dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and is possibly associated with the Crewe family. All the tombs are made of limestone and feature flat tops.

From south to north, the first tomb has heavy moulded capping and a plain inscription panel on the east, which is indecipherable. It is breaking up badly on the north side as of November 1984. The second tomb has a moulded plinth and capping, with flattened lyre ends and fielded panels, and its long sides are divided into three fielded panels. The third and fourth tombs are joined together by a stone panel and iron staples, featuring plain ends and sides with very heavy cappings. The inscription on the north side of the fourth tomb is dated 1667.

The fifth tomb has a moulded capping rounded to the east, plain sides, and an inscription on the north side, which is also breaking up badly. The sixth tomb features moulded capping with colonnettes at the four corners and fluted end panels between. It has rectangular inscription panels on the south and north sides, each decorated with flattened scrolls, and includes the name of Edward Crewe, who died in 1709.
