Description

The Niblett Monument is a chest tomb located about 3 meters east of the Dowdeswell Monument in the churchyard of the Church of St. Nicholas. It dates from 1676 and is dedicated to Sarah Niblett. The tomb is made of limestone and features a flat top with a moulded plinth and capping. The ends are shaped like lyres and adorned with acanthus returns and cherubs holding oval panels. The north side has recessed moulded rectangular panels with drapery drops on either side. The south side displays a central oval inscription panel surrounded by moulding and flanked by swags of fruit and foliage. On this side, there are also high relief figures of a seated male and female child, each holding a book and a skull. This monument is a very richly modelled example of its kind.
