Description

The Samuell Beard and Henry Butt monuments are two chest tombs located about 5.5 meters northeast of the east buttress of the porch in the churchyard of the Church of St. Nicholas in Standish. The southern tomb is dedicated to Samuell Beard, who died in 1653, and is made of limestone. It features a flat top, a moulded plinth and capping, and plain slab sides and ends. The incised inscription on the southern side is still clearly visible and reads: "HEAR RESTETH THE BODY / OF SAMUELL BEARD YEA / MAN WHO DECESED THE / 8 DAY OF JUNE WAIGHT / ING FOR A JOYFULL RE / ZURRECTION UNTO GLO / RY ANNO DOMINI 1653". The east end of this tomb has slightly shifted as of the survey in January 1986. The northern tomb is for Henry Butt, who died in 1822, and is constructed from sandstone. It also has a flat top with a moulded plinth and capping on a large base, slightly indented ends with recessed panelled returns, and a rosette frieze. The sides feature plain recessed panels and the tomb was partially overgrown at the time of the survey.
