Description
The Gyde Monument is an obelisk tomb located approximately 15 meters northeast of the lych gate in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary. It dates from the mid-19th century and is made of sandstone. The monument features a square obelisk set on a high square pedestal, which has plain pilasters framing sunk panels. It includes a high moulded base resting on a square sub-base. The monument commemorates various members of the Gyde family, with the earliest date recorded as 1856. Gyde was a significant benefactor to Painswick, contributing to the establishment of almshouses and an orphanage.
