Description

This building is a barn with an attached cow byre and cart shed, located approximately 25 meters northeast of Edge Farmhouse and dating from the 19th century. It is constructed of squared and coursed limestone, featuring a stone slate roof on the front slope and a concrete slate roof on the back slope. The barn is long and has deep opposed cart entries. To the left and back of the barn is a two-storey cart shed with a loft, and to the right is a single-storey cow byre.

The barn has coped gables with cross-roll saddles, and the roof sweeps down to later lean-tos on the south side. There is a large porch opening with a concrete lintel, which supports a two-light 19th-century casement window and a pigeon opening in the gable. Each side of the porch has a door and an opening leading to the lean-tos. The far side of the barn features three over three ventilation slits to the left of the deep porch and one over one slit to the right, partially concealed by the cart shed. The west gable of the barn has 14th-century flamboyant tracery in two lights, a square loading door, two over one slits, and a square opening.

Inside, the barn has eight bays with a queen post, a two-purlin roof, loft floors above the porch, and an inserted floor at the west end beyond a concrete threshing floor. All slits have deep internal splayed embrasures. The cart shed has a gable to the north with a timber lintel over an open ground floor, which is divided by a continuous spine wall. There is a flight of stone steps leading to the loft door towards the barn, and a similar door on the opposite side. The cow byre, which is opposite the farmhouse, consists of nine open bays divided by square tapered stone pillars supporting wood spreader caps. Its roof features heavy, slightly cambered tie beams, and there is a continuous stone feeder trough with a concrete floor.

The barn is attached to the east gable of the barn by a short return wing. It is part of a striking farm group and was damaged by fire in early 1987, but the integrity of the building remains.
