Description
Podgwell Barn is a field barn dated 1838, constructed from ashlar limestone with a brick lining inside. The roof is covered with clay plain tiles for three courses and Welsh slate at the eaves, featuring coped verges. This long barn has deep central gabled cartways with lofts above. The northern cartway includes a wood cambered lintel set in a segmental voussoir arch, which has a keystone inscribed with "TC 1838." Above this is a square opening leading to the loft, along with a gable bulls-eye in a square field. To the left, there are three ventilation slits at two levels, and to the right, there are two similar slits. The east gable showcases a fine elliptical arch with a keystone, positioned above two sets of slits (2 + 1) and a bulls-eye opening. The southern porch mirrors the northern one but lacks a loft opening or date.
Inside, the barn features a heavy tie beam and 'queen post' roof with two purlins, organized in a 4:1:3 bay layout. Podgwell Barn is a notable example of a well-constructed farm building using Painswick stone.
