Description

Upper Holcombe Farmhouse and its attached outbuilding are a farmhouse complex dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with some 19th-century alterations. The building features good squared and coursed limestone on its long fronts, with rubble returns and a stone slate roof, while the outbuilding has a concrete tile roof.

The earliest part of the farmhouse is located at the road end and includes a gabled back wing. The main front, which faces southeast, has an 18th-century design, with a 19th-century extension and raised roof. The structure is two storeys high with an attic.

The entrance front includes a stone-slated pentice supported by four square stone piers, which connects to the outbuilding. To the right, there is a full-height gabled wing featuring a 2-light recessed chamfered stone casement beneath a stopped hood in the gable, a similar blocked casement on the first floor, and a 20th-century 2-light casement on the ground floor. To the left, there are two small square openings above the pentice, with a 2-light recessed chamfer and a blocked opening flanking a 20th-century door at ground level.

The gable facing the road has a 2-light ovolo moulded stone casement on the first floor to the left, along with two blocked openings. Continuous moulded string courses are present at both the gable and first-floor levels. The far gable features a 3-light recessed chamfered stone mullion casement.

On the garden front, the ground floor includes a 19th-century three-light casement under a deep plain stone lintel, a 20th-century glazed door with a flat-roofed porch, a 3-light recessed chamfer, and a 2-light recessed chamfer casement. The first floor has a 3-light casement with a plain head, along with a 3-light and a 2-light recessed chamfered mullion casement, and two 2-light gabled dormers. All windows are fitted with leaded glazing.

At the gable facing the road, there is a large ashlar stack with a skirt and capping, as well as a smaller ashlar stack with capping near the ridge at the opposite end. The main block is linked to the outbuilding by a pentice roof. To the left, there is a small two-storey gabled outbuilding from the 19th century, which has a gable stack and a plank door at the upper level, accessed by stone steps at the gable end away from the house.
