Description
The Cottage at Holcombe End is a small, detached cottage dating from the 17th century, although it has undergone significant alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from squared and coursed limestone and features concrete slates, with one gable that has a coping to the saddle. The cottage is two stories tall with an attic and has a very large external stack on the north side, which has a rebuilt ashlar shaft.
The entrance front includes two over two and one over three-light recessed chamfered stone mullioned casements, all set beneath stopped hoods. The first-floor windows are positioned under a single mould. The south end of the cottage has 20th-century openings and a staircase leading to a plank door at the first-floor level. Inside, the cottage retains very large chamfered beams on both the ground and first floors. There are extensions to the north that are not of special interest. It is possible that this cottage served as a service building, such as a kitchen or bakery, for an earlier house that once stood on the site.
