Description

Holcombe Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1700, located in Painswick. It features coursed and square dressed limestone with roofs made of Welsh slate, concrete tile, or concrete slate. The building is a cross-passage house that has had a second parallel range added to the east side, creating paired gables and a central valley. At the north end, there is a one-storey transverse addition with a slate roof.

The early west front, which faces away from the road, is two storeys high and has a part cellar. It includes three windows: a 3-light window at ground floor, a 2-light window at first floor, and an extra stair light. To the right, there is a sink panel below a window with a small cellar opening. The off-centre right doorway leads to the cross-passage and features a deep stone lintel with a peaked head, along with a circular panel inscribed 'SRS MDCC'. All windows and the doorway have stopped hoods.

The left return has a double gable with two 3-light casements under a common hood at valley level, above an extension with a central plank door. The right return also has a double gable with two 2-light casements under hoods at each level. There is a large external stack on the left and a line of flush quoins set back from the corner.

The road-facing east front is likely from the 19th century but resembles the opposite side, featuring a 3:2:3-light arrangement of ground floor and first floor casements with hoods. The off-centre door is located to the left under a common hood, with a central window above. All casements are recessed with a hollow chamfer. The gables throughout have saddle-back copings. A small block to the right has two small single lights. The interior has not been inspected, but a vaulted cellar has been reported.
