Description

A row of fourteen houses built in 1833 for David Ricardo, located on the north side of Minchinhampton Town in the west end of Minchinghampton. The houses are constructed of coursed and squared limestone, with random rubble to the sides and rear, ashlar chimneys, and a stone slate roof. The two-storey houses have attics, and a continuous outshut to the rear. The row is emphasized by gabled end blocks, each with a round arched light to a mullioned casement with a hood mould. One mullioned casement is three-light to the ground floor, with a three-centred arched doorway. Upper floor mullioned casements are two-light, and the attic has a two-light window with a datestone in the gable apex, topped with a ball finial. The rest of the row has two-window, segmental arched casement fenestration, with larger ground floor casements having segmental arched doorways to the left. Many casements retain leaded timber. Each house has a central, eaves-mounted gabled dormer. The houses are divided into groups of three by simple rusticated pilasters. Each house has a ridge-mounted chimney with a plain cap, and one to the rear gable of each end block. The continuous rear outshut has a catslide roof, with eaves-level gabled dormers to each house. Contemporary outbuildings include ash houses at each end. Some 20th-century additions have been made to the rear. The interiors have not been inspected.
