Description
Hill House Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse with an early 18th-century rear wing and a front section built in 1820, as indicated by the datestone. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed and random rubble limestone with ashlar chimneys, and has a concrete plain tile roof. The front range comprises two rooms, arranged over two storeys and incorporating a cellar. A two-storey rear wing is also present.
The front of the farmhouse features three 2-light chamfered mullioned casement windows on each floor, each with a hood mould. A gabled parapet porch with a moulded Tudor arch and circular side windows sits centrally; a datestone above the arch reads ‘TW/1820’. The doorway is Tudor arched and has a four-panel door. A gabled parapet marks the west end, containing a ridge chimney, a continuous drip mould at upper floor level, and an off-centre cellar doorway with a plank door, alongside a 2-light mullioned casement. The east end also has a gabled parapet with a ridge chimney, and 2-light casements on each floor. There are indications of several blocked single-light windows. The rear wing, flush with the gable, has a 3-light window with a hood and a 2-light window. The rear elevation to the right of the wing incorporates 2-light casements on each floor, and a projecting chimney to the north gable end of the wing has a brick shaft.
Inside, the principal rooms have four moulded 19th-century stone fireplaces. The farmhouse stands on the opposite side of the yard to the barn. Local tradition suggests the farmhouse was built using stone from Grant House.
