Description
The Congregational Chapel, built around 1865, is located in Painswick Edge. It is constructed of limestone with an ashlar finish and features a Welsh slate roof. The front of the chapel is pedimented and supported by four pilasters that carry a moulded entablature and a moulded pediment cornice. The central entrance consists of a four-panel door beneath a radial fanlight, framed by a raised surround with imposts and a panel with a sunk edge. On either side of the door are 15-pane sash windows with radial heads, set in flat raised surrounds with imposts. The pediment has an incised line and contains a circular panel with a ventilating edge. To the left, there are four round-arched 15-pane sash windows with radial heads. At the back of the building, there are two joined octagonal stacks. The interior has been gutted. The front of the chapel is complemented by close-spaced spearhead railings that run the full width and return to the building, with a central small double gate featuring a simple over-thrown design. Overall, the chapel presents a bold and well-detailed facade to the street.
