Description
The Poplars is a detached dwelling located on Bristol Road in Slimbridge, believed to have been a coaching inn. It dates back to the 17th century and is constructed of thin brick with wide joints and a concrete tile roof. The building is long and narrow, featuring a main stack on the right of center that decreases in width. It has two storeys and an attic, with three widely spaced windows. The windows are 2-light casements set under wooden lintels.
On the right side, there is an off-centre 6-panel door, two of which are glazed, framed by a moulded architrave and a modern porch. The north-facing gable on the left has a blocked opening with a 4-pane wooden light leading to the attic space, and there are 4-light and 3-light casements on the first and ground floors respectively, both with stone mullions and surrounded by a cement coating. Brick string courses are present at each floor level. A similar 3-light modified stone mullion window is located at the centre of the first floor at the back, along with a second entry under a modern porch.
Inside, there is a roll mould beam in the centre room on the ground floor and a newel stair on the left side. The roof features double purlins. The building appears to have been constructed in two stages, with the last bay on the right, beyond the main stack, added later, as indicated by a visible straight joint at the front and a slight joggle in the wall at the back.
