Description

The barn at Tanhouse Farm, located about 60 meters northeast of Church End House in Frampton-on-Severn, is a Grade II* listed building. It is believed to have been rebuilt shortly after a violent storm in 1688, with some parts dating back to the late 16th or early 17th century. The structure features square panel timber-framing set on a stone plinth, with a brick wall on the left side that houses the cowhouse. The lowest level of the front and parts of the gable ends are filled with brick, while the remaining infill is made of split pales, some of which have been renewed. The gable ends and most of the rear wall are timber boarded on the outer side. The roof is covered with concrete tiles and has a half hip on the left end.

The cowhouse consists of three bays, separated from the four-bay barn by a half-height brick wall that forms the end of the first floor, with a raised cobbled floor beneath. Above this partition wall are a pair of raised crucks above a tie beam. The remaining roof timbers show various construction methods, and not all original timbers are present. The trusses mainly consist of tie-beams with queen post struts. The first floor is located in the end two bays of the barn section, which features opposed flush cart entries with renewed timber double doors. The cowhouse has three doors on its north side, with the central door made of planks and large strap hinges that may be original. Additionally, there are slit vents in brick on both floors on the south side, along with two small wooden shuttered openings on the lower floor.
