Description

Scar Hill is a former lodge that has been converted into a detached house, built around 1860 by Benjamin Bucknall for William Leigh. The building is constructed from coursed dressed limestone and features ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof. It is designed in the High Victorian Gothic style and is two stories high, with a stair wing on the south side.

On the south side, there is an off-centre gabled stair wing that has moulded coping, kneelers, and finials. It includes two single stair-lights with hoodmoulds and a quatrefoil vent at the gable apex. To the left, there is a mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor. A hipped coped porch hood is situated at the angle to the right, supported by an octagonal corner column, with a small upper floor window above. To the right of the porch, there is another mullioned and transomed casement window. The building features stone gutters supported by shaped stone brackets. A central ridge-mounted chimney has a cluster of six square shafts with a weathered cap.

The ends of the building have parapet gables with kneelers. The west end has a projecting chimney with three square shafts, flanked by a single-light window on the ground floor and a two-light casement on the upper floor. At the east end, there are mullioned and transomed casements on each floor, with a quatrefoil vent above. The rear of the building has an off-centre gabled dormer with coping and a finial, along with single and two-light mullioned casements that share a hood and a quatrefoil vent above. There is a three-light casement on the ground floor, while a lean-to addition to the right is not of special interest.

Inside, the building features transverse stone arches in the principal rooms that lead to brick-vaulted ceilings. Scar Hill stands on the western drive to The Mansion at Woodchester Park.
