Description
St Stephen's is a detached house built around 1860 by Benjamin Bucknall. The building features coursed and dressed limestone, with ashlar and rendered brick chimneys, and a concrete tile roof. It is two storeys high and has a rectangular shape.
The southeast front is asymmetrical, with a roughly central doorway that has a hoodmould, and a 2-light chamfered mullioned casement to the right. The doorway is obscured by a timber lean-to porch addition. To the left on the ground floor, there is a single-light casement, with a 2-light casement located immediately below the eaves. The building has shaped stone gutter brackets, although the original stone gutters and downpipes have been replaced with standard 20th-century fittings.
A central ridge-mounted chimney features a cluster of four shafts, some of which have been rebuilt in the 20th century. The gabled ends have parapets, with the northeast end featuring a central buttress, two 2-light casements on the ground floor, and a 4-light window above that has been replaced in the 20th century, along with a quatrefoil gable vent. The southwest end has undergone more alterations, including two single-light ground floor casements and a 20th-century metal casement in the rendered gable, also with a quatrefoil gable vent.
At the rear, there is an off-centre parapet gable with 2-light casements and a segmental arched doorway below, which has a hoodmould grouping with a 2-light casement to the right. The interior has not been inspected. This building is similar in design to Scar Hill but lacks the gabled stair wing. Like Bucknall's other buildings in Nympsfield, it was constructed for William Leigh to provide accommodation for the newly established Catholic community.
