Description
The Nympsfield War Memorial is a timber cross dating from around 1918, featuring an earlier lead figure of the crucified Christ that was brought from the battlefield at Beugny on the Somme. Additional names were added in 1996.
The memorial consists of a metal figure of Christ affixed to a coped timber cross, which is set into a polygonal limestone base. The base has three faces, each with stone panels that feature carved lettering. The central panel is inscribed with a message commemorating the recovery of the crucifix from the battlefield, along with a reminder of God's mercies during the Great War and a blessing for the living and the dead. It also includes a biblical reference. The flanking panels list the names of nine individuals who fell in the First World War and two soldiers who died in the Second World War. Two of these panels have been renewed.
