Description
The Rose and Crown Inn is an inn with attached outbuildings, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone, featuring ashlar and concrete block rebuilt chimneys, and has a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic and a collar, and it has a rear wing that connects to a parallel rear range, which projects to the north and includes a cross-wing at the end.
The east front of the inn has a four-window arrangement, with all windows being stone mullioned and transomed on both the ground and upper floors. There are two half gables that contain two-light mullioned attic casements. The central doorway features a recessed 20th-century door. A ridge-mounted chimney with paired rebuilt shafts is located towards the north end of the building.
At the south end, a wing projects to the rear and has a similar two-light window in its half gable, with a lean-to structure below. This wing also has a ridge-mounted chimney with paired shafts and a hollow moulded cap. The north end features a single two-light casement on each floor of the main gable end. The rear wing has a higher north-facing gable with a ridge-mounted chimney that has three shafts and a moulded cap. There is a lower range adjoining the rear wing that includes a gabled porch, and the gable end of the cross wing to the right has a square timber louvred ridge-mounted ventilator, suggesting that this part may have originally served as a malthouse. The interior has not been inspected.
